The soil of the experimental field at Bad Lauchstädt is a loess black earth and the parent material is loess over boulder clay. The ground water level is situated at 12 m; however, waterbearing strata occur between 4 to 6 m depth, depending on the quantity and distribution of precipitation over long periods (Table 1).
