Abstract

The transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels are named after the role of the channels in Drosophila phototransduction. Mammalian TRP channel subunit proteins are encoded by at least 28 genes. TRP cation channels display an extraordinary assortment of selectivities and activation mechanisms, some of which represent previously unrecognized modes of regulating ion channels. In addition, the biological roles of TRP channels appear to be equally diverse and range from roles in thermosensation and pain perception to Ca2+ and Mg2+ absorption, endothelial permeability, smooth muscle proliferation and gender-specific behaviour. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
