Abstract

Ten papers present theoretical examinations of why and how connecting people, making them directly visible to one another, yields different results from those of the market mechanism alone. Discusses solidarity and social business--a theoretical background (Yukio Ikemoto and Noriatsu Matsui); microcredit, inclusive finance, and solidarity (Matsui and Hiromi Tsuboi); Grameen-model microcredit in a developed country--Spain (Tsuboi and Nazrul I. Chowdhury); renewable energy resources for villages off the grid (Tsuboi); yogurt for the poor--progressive nutrition (Tsuboi); distributing clean water in communities (Tsuboi); local currency and regional revitalization (Matsui); the role of solidarity in organic agriculture (Ki-Hueng Kim and Ikemoto); certified coffee and solidarity (Ikemoto); and the development of social business in the Republic of Korea (Kim). Matsui is in the Faulty of Economics at Teikyo University. Ikemoto is in the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia at the University of Tokyo. Index.
