Light-emitting microdisplays have “in-principle” advantages over lightmodulating microdisplays in terms of simplicity of optical design and power efficiency, especially for applications in which the pixel duty cycle is low. This section describes the popular incumbent OLED microdisplay technology in some detail and considers some other contenders.
