Abstract

This study presents humanizing practices instituted at a public hospital in caring for victims of the tragedy in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This report on experiences was built through statements by the workers involved in receiving relatives of the victims of this tragedy. The practices adopted, to promote exchanges of solidarity and thus produce healthcare, comprised: linkage and partnership between different services provided by the institution; implementation of disaster response protocols; creation of a listening space; and reordering of flows and care processes. From the PNH guidelines, we indicate the mechanisms used and how the victims of this catastrophe were received at this hospital. The experience of close contact with the PNH developed at this institution, within the logic of institutional support, enabled institutional interventions and new work practices that were adapted to the context and aligned with the aim of humanizing healthcare and management.
