Computer and Telecommunications Applications to Enhance the Quality of Life of Our Elderly Citizens

Abstract

Over the next few decades, the number of elderly persons in the United States is expected to increase at a rate faster than the general population. The number of persons over 65 is projected to increase by nearly 50 percent before the end of this century; the percentage of those 80 years old or more will also increase as medicine becomes more adept at prolonging life. These individuals will differ from their parents and grandparents. They are likely to be better educated, wealthier, healthier, and possess more social and political awareness. They will want more than a decent place to live and enough to eat; they will want more independence, continued productivity, and be less tolerant of custodial care. In other words, they will want an enhanced quality of life in their twilight years.
