Abstract

Fog is an underrated natural hazard that takes a large toll in lives every year from accidents mainly in transportation (road, air, and marine). Fog also disrupts transport, communications, and construction on a global scale impacting economies with billions of dollars (US) in losses, although total impacts may not be calculable. Mitigation efforts at dissipating fog, providing accurate and early forecasts, and devising successful warning systems have a long and successful history. The continued list of international accidents shows that further efforts are needed to make these efforts universal.
