Abstract

Chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyposis are the main indications for ethmoid surgery. The pathogenesis of these diseases remains unclear and surgery may be palliative, although effective if adequately combined with proper medical treatment. Computed tomography is the preoperative modality of choice in creating a road map and in showing the bony architecture and features. Obstruction of the ostiomeatal complex represents the crucial surgical target. Limited procedures are frequently successful. Surgical steps are tailored to individual cases. Preoperative and postoperative care plays an essential role in the safe and efficacious treatment of ethmoid diseases. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
