Consumer Borrowing

Abstract

This paper provides a brief review of the consumer borrowing market and indebtedness within that. Trends in consumers’ borrowing are examined, concentrating on the period since the house price boom that occurred in the late 1980s. The impacts of debt and its effects on consumers and lenders are considered; as are potential impacts on lenders. Regulations, both existing and possible, are discussed, together with some implications for developments in the consumer borrowing market. Finally, some thoughts are given to the future.
