Defining the Disease: Uncomplicated Versus Complicated Appendicitis

Abstract

The definition of uncomplicated and complicated appendicitis has been debated for decades. Many agree that a visible hole in the appendix or a fecalith in the abdomen signifies complicated appendicitis; however, controversy exists in the wide spectrum of disease that includes findings of suppurative, phlegmonous, and/or gangrenous appendicitis. Appropriate categorization of patients with complicated appendicitis is important in order to employ the proper treatment pathway and reduce the risk of postoperative abscess formation and other associated complications.
