Abstract

A developmental perspective is presented on how the root apical meristem is formed, how patterning information is generated and maintained, how the meristem functions, and how differentiated root cells become reprogrammed to generate the meristems of lateral roots. An overview of the results from genetic, molecular and cell biological investigations on the model system Arabidopsis and other plant systems are presented.
