Behavioural changes are an important indicator of feline welfare. An understanding of normal behaviour, and the constraints that are placed upon it by the domestic environment, is essential if the welfare of the cat is to be safeguarded. The presentation of feline behavioural problems to veterinary practices and behaviour counsellors is increasing, and highlights the need for owner education in feline behaviour and for veterinary understanding of the close links between behaviour and disease. Consideration is given to the incidence and nature of behaviour problems in the feline population, the influence of natural behaviour on reported problems, and the interplay between behaviour and medical conditions. The welfare implications of some of the most commonly presented feline behaviour problems are discussed.
