Abstract

A diagnostic interview is a useful first step in the assessment and treatment of a child exhibiting mental health concerns. There are a number of factors particular to youth that may impact the process of diagnostic interviewing. Similar to the diagnostic interviewing with other populations, it is of utmost importance to approach the process with children with genuine warmth and sensitivity in order to build and maintain rapport throughout the interview process. This chapter presents information relevant to the diagnostic interviewing process with children (and their caregivers), including the importance of considering development, guidelines for gathering information, a case study to illustrate the process, and considerations for diverse youth.
