Abstract

Hazard is an event, phenomenon, process, situation, or activity that may potentially be harmful to the affected population and damaging to the society and the environment. The term is also used to describe the temporal probability of occurrence of the event or situation in question. The dual meaning of hazard creates ambiguity in scientific discussions and different disciplines apply the term in different ways. Considering the pros and cons of different definitions, the general definition of hazard given above is recommended.
