Abstract

To further improve the efficiency of standard JPEG compression algorithm, an adaptive quantization technique based on the non-uniform rectangular partition is proposed in this paper. The texture characteristics of each 8*8 block of the image can be obtained to choose the different quantization tables which are corresponding to different texture complexities after performing the non-uniform rectangular partition of image. Experiments with some standard images is done and the results proved that the proposed method is valid, feasible and has a better reconstruction quality and compression rate in the same condition by comparing with those in the standard JPEG. © 2012 Springer-Verlag GmbH.
