Abstract

It had been apparent to the author for some time that the means of protecting excavations needed critical review. The brief for developing the present lamp system was simple. It had to properly fulfill its primary purpose as a road lamp, yet be robust and inconvenient to remove from site. It also had to be multi-purpose in so far as it could be used as a barrier stand and a road danger sign support. Finally, although price was of secondary consideration the targeted unit cost was set at POUND 6. 00. The present short article describes the considerations and steps in achieving these goals.
