Abstract

5XXX series alloy are used for various applications including automotive, marine and space applications due to their good performance during welding and high corrosion resistance. Commercial Al-Mg-Sc alloys typically contain ~0.2 wt% of Sc and possess improved strength up to 1.5 times. The main limitation for application of these alloys is their high price, so it is necessary to reduce Sc content. Forgings are the popular semi-products for various applications, but depending on scheme of deformation materials can show various structures. This paper deals with the results of investigations of performance of Al-Mg-0.1Sc alloy during hot deformation and further heat treatment. Results of the influence of deformation temperature on mechanical and corrosion properties are introduced. It is shown that even small addition of Sc with proper choice of thermos-mechanical processing can lead to significantly increase of service characteristics with no dramatic reduction of corrosion resistance.
