Abstract

When a piece of metal is immersed in an electrolyte solution, an electric potential difference is developed between the metal and the solution. This phenomenon is not unique to a metal and electrolyte; in general whenever two dissimilar conducting phases are brought into contact, an electric potential is developed across the interface. In order to understand this effect, consider first the related case of two dissimilar metals in contact.
