A short review of the instrumentation and the theory of photoemission spectroscopy (PES) is presented, with special emphasis on high energy resolution. Experimental results on the electron-phonon interaction in a two-dimensional metallic system (L-gap surface state of Cu(111)) and a three-dimensional conventional superconductor (Pb(110)) are provided. The influence of overlayers (rare gases, Ag) on the L-gap surface states on Cu(111), Ag(111), and Au(111) is described. Finally the investigation of the Kondo resonance in several Ce-based heavy-Fermion compounds is presented. © 2007 Springer.
