Abstract

This study attempts to examinesigns and symbols of the word Al-Diin in the Qur'an. This study employs semioticsapproach to explain the data. Semiotics is the study of sign and symbol and the Qur‘an is the scripture that contained many signs and symbols. Therefore, semiotics can be used to analyze symbols in the Qur'an to uncover its meaning. The semiotics approach utilizes in this study follows Charles Sanders Peirce who famous with his trichotomy model of Semiotics e. i. sign, object, and interpretant. This study uses qualitative method to explain the data gathered. The result of the study shows that the word Al-Diin in the Qur'an has various meanings. It refers not only to religion but also to other several meaning namely: First, Al-Diinrefers toJudgement day of the hereafter;Second, Al-Diin refers to religion;Third, Al-Diin means laws or regulations of the of kings in the kingdoms; andFourth, Al-Diin means implementation of God‘s instruction to human beings. .
