Abstract

It is useful the gender of perfumes which users feel with sniffing is revealed. We conducted the sensory evaluation experiment of sniffing perfumes. Seven perfumes those were selected from fourteen perfumes based on pre-experiment were diluted four conditions of concentration. Twenty eight samples were evaluated about the intensity, the comfort, and five impressions (those were “Prefer/Not prefer”, “Sweet/Not sweet”, “Thin/Thick”, “Exotic/Sober” and “Masculine/Feminine”) in random order by fifty participants. It was revealed sensory evaluations of perfumes of various concentrations. For example, there were differences in “Masculine/Feminine” evaluation depending on concentration, and even at the same concentration, the variance of “Masculine” or “Feminine” evaluation was very large depending on perfume. Furthermore, “Masculine” or “Feminine” evaluations by participants were compared with gender recommended by the sellers. Some perfumes for men or unisex were evaluated as “Feminine”. Moreover, impressions of perfumes were compared between female and male participants for each concentration. In some perfumes, there were large differences about evaluations of some impressions.
