Abstract

Sidoarjo Mud Flow Control Center carried out an effort to utilize Sidoarjo mud (LuSi) as a material for embankment tests. However, from the observation results of the embankment test, there were cracks suspected due to changes in soil characteristics during seasonal changes. This research aimed to determine the effect of changes in groundwater level as a result of seasonal changes on stability and immediate settlement. The embankment material research was a mixture of LuSi with clay obtained from previous research. The application of the matric suction value on the Soil-Water Characteristic Curve (SWCC) was carried out to determine the embankment stability and reduction with variations in groundwater level elevation, LuSi deposit, and embankment geometry. The effect of changes in the groundwater level showed a range of safety numbers of 1.7-3,4 (M.A.T 0 m) and 2,4-4,6 (M.A.T-30 m). The effect of mud deposit thickness indicated a range of safety values of 1.8-3.5 (1 m of thickness) and 2.5-7.0 (3 m of thickness). The influence of embankment geometry showed that the embankment height and slope affect the settlement.
