The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), which includes China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, was launched in Shanghai on June 15, 2001. SCO evolved from the “Shanghai Five,” which was created in the same Chinese city on April 26, 1996, with the same members except for Uzbekistan. The SCO also has four observer states (India, Iran, Mongolia, and Pakistan) and two dialogue partners (Belarus and Sri Lanka).
