Abstract

Absorption anisotropy measurements reveal the symmetry of the lowest electronic state in CdSe nanocrystals switches from E to A with decreasing nanocrystal diameter. This size dependence originates from a competition between the intrinsic wurtzite crystal field and the nonspherical shape of the nanocrystal.
