Abstract

Optimizing combustion in an opposed-piston, two-stroke (OP2S) diesel engine 658 Abstract Opposed-piston, two-stroke (OP2S) engines were once used in a variety of applica-tions, including commercial trucks, military ships and World War II airplanes. De-spite their inherent fuel efficiency and power density advantages, the engines suffered from high soot and poor oil control – making them unable to meet modern emissions standards. However, with the aid of today's state-of-the-art technologies and engineer-ing methods, Achates Power has successfully modernized the architecture and demon-strated the following when comparing its engine to the best diesels on the road: ● 15 to 24 percent lower cycle-average brake-specific fuel cosumption (depending on the application) with similar engine-out emissions levels ● Less than 0.1 percent fuel-specific oil consumption ● Reduced cost, weight and complexity
