Vatican II was a great event of discernment about how to live the great Christian tradition, that goes back to Jesus of Nazareth, but now in a new cultural setting. In this context of aggiornamento, the Conciliar Assembly faced the question of the identity of the Catholic Church. In 2014, the publication of a new Italian Commentary on the Council began. The project shows how much progress has been made in these decades in the understanding of the Council through historical research and systematic-hermeneutic approaches. The analysis of the pre-Vatican II phase and the study of the following reception, offer a broad perspective, and have been useful for evaluating the changing processes that happened. It also contributes to the reflection on the path that the Church and all the reformulated ecclesial identities are called to follow today.
