Abstract

Distal tibial osteotomy or commonly known as supramalleolar osteotomy (SMO) is an effective way to correct extra-articular malalignment of the ankle. The indications for this include congenital or acquired deformities and the benefits include normalization of force transmission across the ankle and foot. The clinical importance of this is improved pain and gait, and prevention or slowing the progression of arthritis. SMO with a circular hexapod external fixator is indicated for complex deformity, deficiency of length, or a poor soft-tissue envelope. This technique is minimal incision and is highly accurate.
