Abstract

Samples of oceanic cloud water collected in November and December, 1967, at the top of Pico del Oeste, in the Luquillo Mountains of eastern Puerto Rico during periods of varying rates of sea salt aerosol production were analyzed for Cl-, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, and SO42-. The portions originating from sea salt, chem. fractionation, and advected materials were calcd. for each ion. Enrichment by chem. fractionation of sea salt was detected only for Mg2+. Considerable contributions of Ca2+ and SO42- from nonmaritime origins were obsd. Excess Cl-occurs erratically, and originates from volcanic activity
