Abstract

There has been a substantial increase in preterm births (<37 completed weeks gestation) in the United States during the past few decades (). Between 1990 and 2005 the rate increased by 13.4% for singletons (9.7% in 1990, 11.0% in 2005) and by 19.8% for all births, singleton and plural (10.6% in 1990, 12.7% in 2005).
