Evidence Based Approach to the Management of Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN)

Abstract

Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) is characterised by severe hypoxemia requiring timely recognition and treatment to improve mortality and morbidity. The clinical scenario may often mimic cyanotic heart disease, posing diagnostic challenges to neonatologists and paediatricians. This chapter summarises key concepts of PPHN to enable clinicians to navigate their way to accurate diagnosis and initiate interventions based on available evidence where possible. Newer therapies and on-going research are also briefly summarised.
