Abstract

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, the US, have developed the innovative Universal NAVIgation Technology (UNAVIT), a navigation environment that is basically accessible through mobile phones. This technology helps users with preferences and/or special needs, with navigation information irrespective of the physical environment, outdoors or indoors. The advancement in technologies such as Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wi-Fi has led to the evolution of navigation systems for indoor use. UNAVIT possess the capability for seamless navigation between outdoors and indoors using the same mobile phone and services. This technology offers AnyTime and AnyUser support even during rush hours or inclement weather conditions. The modern navigation systems are not specifically designed to cater to physically or visually impaired individuals. UNAVIT will be able to adjust navigational requirements according to the user requirement and the system will also incorporate road and pavement network information.
