Although juvenile arrests for violent crimes and victimization rates are on the decline, juveniles adjudicated as delinquent continue to be at substantial risk of perpetrating--and/or being the victims of--violent acts. In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of individual, family, and social factors related to risk for delinquency and violent behavior. This is followed by a summary of evidence-based treatment and preventive interventions. The authors begin with an overview of the scope of the problem followed by a developmental perspective on the etiology of delinquency and violence.
