Abstract

ZigBee is a robust wireless communication standard managed by the ZigBee Alliance and based on the standard IEEE 802.15.4 physical and MAC layers. This paper describes an intelligent beacon type sensor system developed for meteorological data capturing. The sensor system is based on a new developed custom designed IEEE802.15.4 ZigBee battery powered sensor module including temperature, humidity and barometric pressure sensors and embedded GPS device. The ZigBee sensor module is FFD type and uses 6LoWPAN protocol with Low Power Listnening (LPL) scheme. Every module can play as PAN coordinator, Cluster Head coordinator or as end sensor device and is suitable for ad-hoc self organized wireless networks implementation. The proposed sensor system uses hierarchical cluster-tree topology. A new adaptive algorithm is developed to optimize the system energy consuming and to increase the time of autonomous work of the sensor modules. The algorithm is based on dynamic analysis of the content of the measured sensor data and depends on the adaptive change of the super-frame size and the consecutive beacons interval.
