Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of psychological intervention techniques that have some empirical basis for children, adolescents, and adults with an intellectual disability (ID), together with a critical analysis of the evidence supporting these approaches. The chapter also describes how the content and process of therapy can be successfully adapted for clients with an ID, including a case example. Lack of clinician knowledge, skills, and confidence in how to effectively tailor therapy to meet the needs of individuals with an ID is purported to be a major contributor to the lack of service availability for this client population.
