Nitroprusside is capable of producing a substantial downward displacement of the left ventricular diastolic pressure volume relationship. There are several possible explanations for the findings and the most likely appear to be that nitroprusside either improves left ventricular relaxation, affects left ventricular viscous properties or alters one or more of the external constraints acting upon the left ventricle. The improved ventricular compliance seen with nitroprusside administration in our patients suggests another potential benefit of this type of therapy in the treatment of patients with congestive heart failure.
