Background: Alveolar macrophages are the primary target of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Results: Mycobacterial PtpA dephosphorylates host GSK3α Tyr 279 resulting in modulation of its activity. Conclusion: Dephosphorylation of GSK3α decreases apoptosis of the host early in infection promoting survival of the macrophage and the pathogen within it. Significance: Understanding the mechanisms by which Mycobacterium tuberculosis enables successful infection is essential for understanding the pathogenesis of tuberculosis.
