Risk management in policing

Abstract

This practitioner piece examines the ‘street level’ view of the management of risk in policing. It makes a case for a robust risk management framework highlighting the role of training and positive learning. A strong leadership and operational credibility are identified as crucial components for senior managers and leaders to minimise risk. It is argued that confidence and trust of the public is an absolute priority and is at the heart of British policing. The author concludes that a proactive approach to listening coupled with strong leadership can help to make sensible decisions about addressing risks and managing them.
