Abstract

Understand the difference between malignant hypertension, hypertensive emergency, and hypertensive urgency. Understand the pathophysiology of a hypertensive crisis. Evaluate and diagnose hypertensive crisis using history, physical examination, and laboratory studies. Know the various classes of drugs to treat hypertensive crisis, their mechanisms of action, and their use in treating hypertensive emergencies. Recognize the secondary causes of hypertensive emergencies and the drugs used in their treatment. © 2010 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
