Abstract

The major compounds of valerian, the valepotriates (e.g. valtrate, acevaltrate, didro-valtrate), are triesters of a monoterpene alcohol, with the structure of an iridoid cyclo-penta-(c)-pyran and an attached epoxide ring. These iridoid esters are instable and easily form degradation products (e.g. polymers, baldrinals). The essential oil contains esters of isovalerianic acid, α-hydroxyisovalerianic acid, eu-genol, bornyl acetate, terpene hydrocarbons and sesquiterpenes (e.g. valeranone). The sesquiterpene carboxylic acids (e.g. valerenic and acetoxy valerenic acids) are stable, non-volatile compounds. Both classes of compounds contribute to the sedative effect of valerian root.
