Abstract

Mental disorders, along with physical and cognitive dysfunction, have been noted to complicate the recovery process after ICU for some individuals. Similarly, new dementia remains a concern for individuals and families after critical illness. Adequate follow up and assessment of individuals for mood disorders and possible dementia after critical illness remains a challenge. This chapter reviews the available literature on risks of new onset mental disorders and dementia after critical illness, as well as the methodological challenges associated with conducting these studies. The chapter also identifies potential risk factors for each, and reviews studies of interventions designed to reduce the burden of these diseases.
