Abstract

The following chapter will review the current state of knowledge about commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the United States, including a brief overview of definitions; prevalence; risk factors; recruitment and control mechanisms; physical, sexual, and mental health outcomes; and cumulative effects leading to complex trauma. The historical underpinnings of stigma are explored, as well as the impact of stigma on the response to this vulnerable group. Finally, the authors discuss formal education and training of health care providers, a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approach to patient care, and a multidisciplinary response to minor victims identified in the health care setting as essential preliminary steps to a more effective health sector response.
