Abstract

The execution of precise surgical procedures is determined by the interaction of the surgeons’ individual abilities and the functionality of medical equipment. The main challenge in the development of equipment for endoscopic surgical techniques was the evolution of those procedures during the past 20 years, which constantly defined new requirements for the equipment. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the necessary equipment for endoscopic spinal surgery and defines requirements according to the anatomical and physiological specifications as well as the ergonomics for the surgeon. The variety and necessity of the technologies involved, from endoscopic imaging, radiofrequency and drilling applications to fluid management and manual mechanical instruments, will be demonstrated and examples of commercially available devices and instruments are presented.
