Abstract

The codes and other approved documents ensure a uniform technical criteria, methods and practice across the entire region/country for all professional and other stakeholders to follow. These documents form a set of ‘accepted standards’ in relation to the material specifications and other related information with respect to the materials testing and evaluation and also, of ‘good practice’ in relation to the design controls and construction procedures. These documents are usually approved by various government bodies and carry the force of law, framed with a main objective to protect the public at large by setting up a bare minimum acceptable level of safety for buildings, materials and the related processes. This chapter summarizes a commonly accepted minimum material specifications that must be achieved at the sites to get a desired minimum level of quality in the construction works and also, to fix responsibility whenever something went wrong.
