Abstract

This chapter focuses on building capacity in statistics teacher education, with a twofold purpose. First, this chapter reviews prior research into the profes- sional development of teachers of statistics (elementary, middle, secondary, and tertiary teachers). This provides an overview of different approaches to professional development for teachers of statistics, challenges statistics educators face when building professional development programs, and lessons learned that can inform directions for future research. Second, this chapter looks forward by outlining major challenges, gaps in our knowledge base, and important directions for future research in the professional development of teachers of statistics. We outline a vision for the future of professional development that focuses on building capacity through a strongly integrated focus on practice, content, and technology.
