The occurrence of giant late Holocene subfossil shells of the Jamaican land snail Pleurodonte lucerna is interpreted as representing a period significantly wetter than today. Sometime in the last c.2000 yr, a major decrease in precipitation appears to have occurred in Jamaica. Extinctions of some land snail species in drier areas of the island may also be related to this climatic change. - Author
