Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini berusaha menjawab bagaimana aktivitas serta faktor pengaruh dari gatekeeping yang dilakukan media massa terhadap konten viral di media sosial. Metodologi studi kasus digunakan untuk menelusuri sistem kerja dan metode redaksi yang diterapkan oleh tiga media massa dari Yogyakarta. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui wawancara terhadap redaktur, asisten redaktur, uploader, dan reporter; serta dokumentasi pemberitaan. Peneliti menggunakan Teori Hierarki Pengaruh (Shoemaker Reese, 2014) untuk membahas aktivitas gatekeeping media massa di era internet serta faktor-faktor yang memengaruhinya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa media massa masih memiliki peran dalam melakukan seleksi terhadap konten viral media sosial. Namun, peran tersebut tidak dilakukan secara ketat karena nyaris semua konten viral terpilih lolos begitu saja melewati gerbang keredaksian. Konten viral hanya dinilai secara berbeda berdasarkan sensitivitas informasi. Gatekeeping konten viral dipengaruhi oleh level institusi sosial (pasar pembaca dan perubahan teknologi media). Media sosial Twitter menjadi platform news-breaker tool andalan awak media karena unggul dari segi kecepatan dan kebaruan informasi.Kata kunci: gatekeeping, konten viral, media massa, teori hierarki pengaruh AbstractThis research was conducted to gain an understanding of the activity and influence factor of mass media gatekeeping toward social media viral content. Three Yogyakarta-based local online media were explored by the case study method. Research data was collected through interviews with the editor, assistant editor, uploader, and reporter; and news stories documentation. The hierarchy of influence theory (Shoemaker Reese, 2014) was applied as the main tool to analyze entire data. The result shows that mass media resist their role as a gatekeeper by selecting and fact-checking information. However, they do not carry out strictly as almost selected viral contents are able to pass the editorial gate without any reduction or rejection. Viral contents are considered based on their sensitivity. The gatekeeping of social media viral content is mainly influenced by the institutional level (market reader and technological shifting). Twitter is the favorite news-breaking tool for the rapidness of information updates.Keywords: gatekeeping, viral content, mass media, the theory of influence hierarchy
