Abstract

The human population has increased more than a thousand times from 2–20million at the dawn of settled agriculture about 10–12millennia ago to 7.2billion in 2013. It is projected to reach 9.6billion by 2050 and~11billion by 2100 (UN in World population prospects: The 2012 revision. UN Department of Economic and Projection Section, New York, 2012).
