Abstract

Bhopal's gas leak disaster is the worst recorded industrial disaster in human history. On the night between December 2--3, 1984, methyl isocyanate leaked at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) factory at Bhopal, in central India, spreading into the surrounding environment. This leak of an ``extremely hazardous chemical'' covered the city of Bhopal in a cloud of poisonous gas over the span of a few hours, killing more than 2,000 people.
