A review with refs. discussing the biochem. modification of titanium surfaces to induce specific cell and tissue responses by means of surface-immobilized peptides, proteins, or growth factors. Topics discussed also include modification through silanized titania and photochem.; electrochem. techniques; chem. modifications based on self-assembled monolayers; calcium phosphate coatings; protein-resistant titanium surfaces; and biol. assays. This modification offers the advantage of improving the biocompatibility of a surface without adversely affecting the bulk properties of the system and introduces a new concept of a bio-mimetic surface for the guiding of cell behavior on an ultrathin layer of bioactive mols.
