Abstract

A generation can be referred to different stages of successive improvement in the development of a technology. The first generation of autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI) consisted of cells in suspension injected in under a sutured membrane of a living tissue, periosteum. The second-generation ACI was an exchange of the periosteum with a collagen inert membrane, while the third generation of ACI is the technology where cells are grown prior to implantation in or on different scaffolding materials. This chapter describes the use of such a scaffolding material, Hyaff-11 for implantation with seeded chondrocytes, the Hyalograft® technique.
